The Basics of Making Soy Wax Candles: A Beginner’s Guide

If you’re looking for a creative, calming hobby—or want to create personalized gifts—soy wax candle making is a great place to start. Soy wax is natural, clean-burning, and easy to work with, making it a favorite for beginners and small-batch makers alike. Here’s a simple overview of what’s involved:

What You’ll Need:

  • Soy wax flakes
  • Candle wicks
  • Containers or jars
  • Fragrance oils (optional)
  • Dye or color blocks (optional)
  • A double boiler or microwave-safe container
  • A thermometer

The Basic Steps:

  1. Melt the Wax: Gently heat the soy wax until it reaches 170–180°F, either in a double boiler or the microwave.
  2. Add Fragrance or Color: Once melted, stir in your fragrance oil and any coloring, following recommended ratios.
  3. Prepare Your Containers: Secure the wick in the center of your jar using a wick holder or chopstick.
  4. Pour the Wax: Allow the wax to cool to 135°F.  Then slowly pour the wax into your container, leaving a little space at the top.
  5. Let It Set: Allow the candle to cool and harden completely—usually overnight—before trimming the wick.

Final Tip: Always test burn your candles to ensure they burn evenly and safely.

Soy candle making is simple, customizable, and a relaxing way to add a little extra light to your space.
